Christmas in July: Modern Organic Holiday Decor in a 1930s Renovated Home

I believe in celebrating joy all year long—so what better time to revisit last year’s festive magic than Christmas in July? Our 1930s newly renovated home provided the perfect backdrop for timeless, elevated Christmas holiday decor with a modern organic style that honours the charm of the property’s original architecture.

Our Christmas Trees: Two Styles, One Vision

We styled two exquisite Christmas trees, each with its own personality. One featured neutral Christmas decorations—rattan tree skirt, collected ornaments in golds and glass, amber velvet ribbons, hanging tree candles, and our traditional wooden spools featuring the girls’ Christmas lists – one for every year —blending beautifully into our home’s organic textures. The second tree in the original part of the house embraced vintage Christmas decor: traditional baubles, rustic red velvet ribbons, faux red berry sprigs, soft silver metallics, and classic white lights gave it a refined, traditional look.

Christmas tree styling tip: Pick one or two themes, textures or colours to repeat across your home to create flow and cohesion—even if your trees have distinct themes. We chose velvet bows, warm white lights, and touches of amber throughout.

Garlands, Stockings & Fireplace Styling

Both fireplaces were adorned with garlands and stockings, combining faux garlands and added stems for a full, dimensional effect. We hung exquisite stockings and added a DIY bow garland, brass cowbells and gold metal Merry Christmas garland for a touch of rustic charm.

Fireplace Christmas decor tip: Layer different greenery types and let garlands drape asymmetrically for a natural, effortless feel.

How We Styled the Dining Room

The Christmas dining table was a festive focal point. We opted for a traditional red with gold vintage pattern tablecloth and a mix of candlesticks varying in height and material to give it charm. A black mango wood pedestal bowl of dried oranges, sprigs of rosemary, and cinnamon sticks brought the sensory magic of the season to life.

Our sideboard was decorated with rustic cowbells, velvet ribbon bows, and greenery. Overhead, the ceiling pendant was adorned in festive ribbon bows and gold leaves fairy lights to carry the look vertically through the space.

Dining table decor tip: Mix textures like metallics, velvet and glass with natural elements to create a warm and inviting setting.

Styling Tips for Your Own Christmas Holiday Home

Here are 5 simple ways to recreate the look:

  1. Blend old and new
Mix traditional Christmas decorations with modern styling for a layered, lived-in aesthetic.

  2. Repeat key materials
Use the same ribbon or greenery throughout your tree, fireplace, and table for unity.

  3. Play with scale and height
Use tall candleholders, garlands that cascade, and whimsical bows to create movement.

  4. Decorate upward
Don’t forget pendant lights, door frames, or ceilings for unexpected festive charm. We even suspended a vintage festive framed print from our kitchen cooker hood!

  5. Use texture intentionally
Neutrals come alive when you combine linen, wood, velvet, and metal accents.
