The 10 Best Organising Tips for a Tidy Home

A decluttering and home organisation project is a great way to make you feel refreshed. Whether you live in a large or small home these tips, tricks, and ideas can really help to keep your living space clean, tidy, and presentable.

I personally can’t think straight when my house is a mess! Tidy home, tidy mind as they say!

Home organisation can help you create a more comfortable and harmonious environment and these tips will give you a great starting point:

Decluttering and Organising the Bathroom

In most houses, the bathroom is the smallest and often messiest room. All the products used by the family tend to pile up under the sink or inside cabinets, and you don’t realise when they’ve run out… in our house it’s the toothpaste and deodorant.

Decluttering while cleaning the bathroom is an efficient way to stay on top of this space and these tips will help:

  1. Empty the cabinets and drawers to clean them and take the opportunity to declutter before placing items back in
  2. Keep only the products you use on a daily basis on the bathroom counters or have a dedicated basket for them (which could be at the front of the cabinet). Keep as few items out as possible to make it easier to clean and prevent clutter from accumulating.
  3. Consider storage opportunities on the inside of your bathroom cabinet such as fixing baskets to the inside doors. It will save you a lot of space and provide you with a place to store your tweezers, hair brush, nail clippers, and nail filers. This will help to declutter and make them easier to find.
  4. Mason jars and pretty vases are ideal for storing make-up brushes; they make a pretty statement as well as offering practical storage solutions
  5. Add a shelf above the bathroom door. We did this in our last house and put wicker baskets on them for extra toilet paper rolls, soaps, shampoos, and other supplies.
  6. Use a kitchen tray organiser in your bathroom drawers. A plastic utensil tray doesn’t just have to be used for cutlery!
  7. By leaning an old ladder against a wall, you’ll be creating a DIY towel rail as well as making a unique statement, plus there’s no building or drilling involved!
  8. Take the opportunity to sort your cleaning products and throw away any used up bottles. Place new bottles at the back so the already opened ones are used first.
  9. Have a separate storage basket for each member of the household. By doing this, you will prevent bottles from cluttering the edges of the bath or shower cubicle as the person can grab their designated container when they wish to use it.
  10. If you don’t have a cupboard for towels, roll them up in a pretty basket to save space and make a pretty feature of them

If you do not have the time or do not wish to take care of cleaning and organising yourself, there are professional cleaning companies that can offer you this service so you can focus your energy elsewhere.

Decluttering and Organising the Kitchen

The more organised your kitchen is, the easier it is to keep it that way in the future. Here is a step by step guide to help you:

Organise and declutter your fridge

Eliminate items that are beyond their expiration date or won’t ever get used. In the same way as the cleaning bottles, if you have opened any food items, place them near the front so you’ll use them first.

Go through your collection of mugs

Put your mugs out on a table and only keep those you really like or keep the number of mugs you know you realistically need. The rest can be donated, taken into the office or re-purposed for gifts such as filling them with wax and a wick to make a pretty candle.

Create a pantry challenge

Make meals using pantry ingredients that are almost never used but just sitting there and get the family involved too so it becomes a fun challenge. Organise your pantry shelves by grouping similar items together so you know what you have, then use clear containers for dry goods such as pasta, cereal, baking ingredients and biscuits. Spice racks are a great option too.

Utilise the vertical storage space

Adding a hanging rod to the side of your kitchen island or wall can add a lot of storage space, as can open shelves on wall space. You can hang utensils, baskets, cutting boards, or dish towels.

Tips for organising pans and pots

The drawer method works well for organising pans and pots. Start with the largest pan and then move on to the smaller one so one sits inside the other and keep going until all are stacked together; it’ll save a huge amount of space!

Another solution is a pot rack hanging from the ceiling or hung from a rail on the wall, which brings a traditional element into your home. Various sizes are available, and they provide a perfect storage solution by utilising the vertical space that would otherwise be wasted. Besides being easily accessible, the racks can also serve as beautiful decorative features in your kitchen and you can always add springs of dried herbs for some added character.

An inside cabinet “Lazy Susan”

Lazy Susans are flat, spinning pieces of plastic or wood that fit into corners to easily access tins and other kitchen storage by saving you from having to reach to the back of the cabinet. You can build larger ones inside your kitchen cabinets to provide you with the perfect pots and pans storage solution too.

Keep countertops as clear as possible by storing appliances in cabinets or presenting them nicely on trays.

Regular decluttering

Make it a habit to declutter and organise your kitchen on a regular basis by tidying up and cleaning regularly and then doing a more thorough organisation every few months so clutter doesn’t get out of hand.

Final Thoughts

I personally feel overwhelmed and stressed when our home is cluttered and I firmly believe that having an organised household can positively affect your physical and mental well-being, as well as your overall quality of life.

You can be more efficient in your daily tasks because the more organised you are the more quickly you can accomplish jobs, leaving you more time to do things you enjoy.

I hope these tips have helped you to gain some new tips on keeping your home tidy!
