Birthday toys come and go don’t they?! Interests change, toys get lost and things get broken, so we decided to give both of our daughters a joint garden summer house (their birthdays are only two weeks apart, luckily! check out their joint mermaid party here). The hope is that this gift will last for years and create memories too.

The House

Their summer house is an adult summer house as opposed to a child’s playhouse so we can fit more in it, stand upright and perhaps utilise it ourselves when the girls have grown up. It was so much fun to plan, paint and decorate and most importantly the girls totally love it!

We went for this 7ft x 7ft summer house with a little veranda, flooring included and a base coat so we could paint it ourselves and laid our own decking first. Wayfair is brilliant for choice and they also offer 0% interest so you can spread out the cost too.

The Paint

The summer house is painted in Fresh Rosemary on the outside and can be bought here. We added some to the tops of tree trunks too and they’re perfect little stools!

We used a white timber paint on the inside.

The Decor

We used a grey woven rug we already had from Ikea for the floor, then placed a blue, pink and white striped rug over the top from Laura Ashley to introduce our colour theme. I love how the round shape breaks up the squareness of the house; you can also find more here and here.

We placed an Ikea kitchen in there and added pink spot decals to the doors. The girls love having tea parties in the garden.

The adorable flamingo light looks beautiful at night and can be bought here. We’ve suspended ours using string and a little hook.

The upcycled vintage hostess trolley was a find on eBay and was mahogany lacquer and brass when we collected it. It fits perfectly in the summer house and can be wheeled out for BBQs and parties too! It has also been sprayed rose gold and used as a bar cart at Christmas so we’ve definitely had our £12 worth! When searching yourself on eBay try using different terms to find the right one, such as tea trolley, bar cart and hostess trolley and try adding ‘vintage’ into the mix too.

As well as spraying the cart white we also sprayed some rusty tea and coffee canisters using white and gold spray, then glued toy flamingoes to the top.

We personalised a pack of white card bunting with gold sticky letters and fixed them with pink pegs onto some garden string which we tied to little nails at either side. The ‘&’ in the middle is a wooden ampersand decoration which we also sprayed gold and fixed using a couple of nails.

The pair of garden flamingoes really brings the colour scheme outside, particularly when the summer house doors are shut. They come with metal legs which fit perfectly down the slats of our decking and would easily push into grass too. You can buy them here.

The flamingo fairy lights running under the roof are battery operated and can be found here.

Isla loved her ‘5’ balloon and she was really upset when it deflated so I must remember to get another one for her birthday this year! You can buy them here.

The ukulele being played by our precious Isla was bought at The Conran Shop; they still have a whole array of wonderful gifts for children but this product is no longer available. You can however find similar beautiful ukuleleshere.

The colourful tropical cushion was a Homesense find and we bought the palm cushion covers here but you can also find similar here and here.

There are some beautiful pom pom blankets similar to ours on Etsy.

Our pretty mint and pink playhouse has already provided hours of fun for Isla, Emmie and their friends. It played such a fun part of our Summer Garden Party too!
