Creating your personal serene oasis at home is a wonderful way to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and find peace. Here I’m sharing some tips for creating a serene space in your rented accommodation.
Strategically Select a Colour and Style
Choose hues that help you feel relaxed. Cooler hues such as blue, green and taupe neutrals are frequently popular choices in comparison to bright bold hues. This is even more the case in hot countries where bright colours tend to absorb more heat from the sun, which can make outdoor surfaces uncomfortably hot to the touch. In contrast, lighter, more reflective hues can reduce heat absorption and minimize the need for air conditioning.
Previously I’ve shared how to define your home style – and what I consider to be mine – which is a Transitional Modern Organic vibe, much like Californian Casual schemes. They’re based on a neutral foundation which is layered with organic materials, earthy colours and pops of black, a mixture of woods and vintage as well as modern pieces. All of this can be achieved in a rental with the furniture and accent pieces you use… especially as most rentals have off white walls to begin with!
Use Fresh Flowers
Flowers can add elegance and tranquility to your home, bringing a touch of nature indoors and adding beauty and freshness to your living space. Whether arranged in a vase on the dining table, displayed on a coffee table, or adorning a windowsill, flowers can really uplift your mood and create a calming atmosphere. Multiple researchers have proven that being surrounded by flowers can have positive effects on mental and emotional well-being. That’s why there should be flowers in every home.
Here’s how I’ve styled fresh flowers and living moss in the pots from my own homeware collection:
If you happen to live in Dubai, you can actually even order flowers with vase ! Flower delivery services in the UAE will help you to create your own floral paradise even in your rented accommodation.
Install Ambient Lighting
Lighting is a critical component in creating a calm and soothing environment. The gentle, ambient glow of lighting has a positive impact on our mood and well-being. It promotes the feeling of comfort, cosiness, and relaxation, helping to reduce stress and anxiety.
We’re currently in the middle of our Forever Home Renovation Project and I’m spending a lot of time ensuring we have well layered lighting throughout our home, from dimmer switches for ceiling lights to LED lights under shelves and the kitchen island, as well as floor and table lamps.
LED strips are very low cost, as are lamps (thrifted lamps can bring a pop of personality too!), so if you’re renting it’s not a huge investment to bring ambient lighting to your home.
Update Artwork
In my previous blog post ‘7 Simple Improvements to Make Your House a Haven‘ I shared how you can refresh walls and shelves by simply switching artwork in existing frames. It could even be a gallery wall of all your loved ones and I personally love it when there’s a mixture of different frames too.
