I’ve been dye-ing to make an ombre tablecloth for a while so when I was asked to create a Modern Afternoon Tea Party for Plymouth Tea (see more here) this seemed like the perfect opportunity to give it a go, although I have to confess that it’s sparked a new DIY obsession in my world and I can’t stop thinking about what I can create next! I’m thinking there has to be a way of making a star effect for the festive season?
The pop of pink and ombre is so effective that I’m convinced I’ll be able to use my new fav accessory as a backdrop too so watch this space!
You will need
White tablecloth or bed sheet (mine was cotton)
Dye (I used two Dylon hand wash sachets in light and dark pink)
Salt (I used standard table salt)
Bowl to mix the dye
Large bucket to dye your cloth
Rubber gloves (I didn’t have any so I used sandwich bags, ha ha!)
The How To
Ensuring your hands are covered empty the sachet of the pale coloured dye into 500ml of warm water and mix thoroughly, then add 6l of warm water into your large bucket before stirring in 5 tablespoons of salt.
Pour your dye mixture into the large bucket of water and salt, stir well and submerge your cloth. Bearing in mind the ombre effect I folded my cloth in half and kept the middle section dry.
Stir regularly for 15 minutes then occasionally for 45 minutes.
To create the ombre effect repeat the same process with the darker coloured dye but lift part of the cloth out of the mixture so only the bottom section is covered.
Once the hour has passed squeeze the excess fluid from the cloth, rinse with cold water and hang out to dry.
When the cloth needs to be washed the advice is to do this separately in warm water numerous times, although I haven’t done this myself yet!
I also channeled my inner hippie and made a tie dye version at the same time by tying sections of cloth with bands and submerging all of it into the mixture before removing them at the end of the process. Cuuuuute or what?!
