DIY CAR WITH TREE CHRISTMAS DECORATION

Photography: Kelly Harmer

Have you noticed the ‘alternative’ Christmas decoration trend with flamingoes, llamas and the like? I’ve shared them here but there are also lots of vintage cars carrying brush trees too.

The car trend may be down to Jo Malone who I’m sure used a branded vintage car in their Christmas campaign last year? Anyway, wherever it’s come from I’m digging it and I couldn’t help myself by making my own. Thanks to my bro for allowing me to spray his childhood toys, I promise there’ll be an upcycled one in your stocking this year!

What I love about this DIY are the possibilities with style and colour. I chose to stick to gold and rose gold to tie in with the Baylis & Harding pink van tree tins in our Festive Boho Bonanzashoot, but white with metallic glitter would look incredibly classy, you could go crazy with bright neon colours or it would be rather charming to not change the cars at all if you’re after a more vintage look.

To make your own you will need:

Vintage cars

Brush trees (I used these )

Ribbon or twine

Spray paint (I used these in Gold Bright and Rose Gold)

Dust sheet

First clean the cars to remove any dust or grime then dry, place on a dust sheet and spray evenly from around 30 cm away (ensure you turn the spray paint can upside down and shake first) either outside or in a well ventilated area. Once fully dry turn upside down and spray the underneath. I needed two coats.

Next fix your brush tree to the top of the car with string or ribbon, tie in place and create a loop at the top so you can hang it on the tree. Simples!

As well as looking fabulous on your own tree these would be fabulous gifts or you could use them as posh present tags by adding a tag to the ribbon then fixing to your presents. If you have a larger vintage car or truck you could not include the loop at the top and use a decoration on your fireplace. Cuuuuuuute.

Share your DIY on Instagram and tag @ohsokel if you make your own car ornament as we’d love to see the results.

Happy Holidays!

Until next time,

OSK xx
