Your home is an expression of who you are, inside and out. Everyone has their own unique edge, whether it’s conveyed through your furniture or decor choices.
Natural elements can be a great way to add a touch of personality to your home. To make your house reflect who you are, try experimenting with the following elements.
Rattan
Adding simple touches to your home can go a long way. If you are searching for ways to add personality to your interior design, incorporate rattan features.
Rattan is a beautiful natural material that comes from a vine-like palm. It is commonly woven into intricate designs for furniture and aesthetic statement pieces, perfect for your unconventional touches. Pair rattan furniture and decor with dark, contemporary designs for a unique look or like us, use it to create depth and texture in a neutral colour scheme.
Aluminium
Interior metalwork is growing in popularity as more people embrace industrial interior design. It provides homes with an added edge while remaining affordable and easy to clean. Aluminium is one of many types of metals making its way into homes because of its lightweight design and versatility.
Designers Vy Truong and Han Dang describe the industrial style as a cross between modern grunge and farmhouse, with exposed pipes and raw natural elements throughout. To achieve a sleek, industrial look, add aluminium light fixtures, wall panels and room dividers to your space.
Pairing it with wood furniture is also a classic approach to adding warmth to the factory-inspired aesthetic. For instance, you might set an artistic aluminium statement piece on a wood console. To keep your edgy space comfortable, soften the appearance with natural textiles, such as rugs, throw blankets and sheer curtains.
Natural Stone
Incorporating natural stone into your home design can give you a unique look. To add personality to your dining room or kitchen, add a stone countertop to draw attention to the room. You can choose from a wide variety, including marble, granite and quartz. We chose quart in our kitchen, including the backsplash and shelves.
Dark Wood
From dark floors to black bathrooms, wood can be the perfect material to create that modern, edgy look. There are many dark woods, including Eastern black walnut, cherry and maple. If you want a sharp black that draws attention, try ebony.
Balancing deep, rich tones with light, neutral countertops and statement pieces can create a sleek contrast. If you use dark wood for your walls, consider adding more windows and a light ceiling to open up the room. Staining furniture dark is also a way to freshen up older pieces for an edgier interior design.
We have light oak plank flooring in our downstairs open plan living space and have created a contrast by upcycling a sideboard using black furniture paint and bringing dark wood dining chairs into the mix.
Concrete
Concrete is the perfect material for experimenting with DIY at home. To add a touch of edge to your house, include concrete fixtures or go even bolder with an accent wall. Some use it for their fireplace surround for a strikingly rugged focal point.
To make concrete, you only need three materials — cement, an aggregate like sand or gravel, and water. For the perfect concrete mixture, use 10 to 15% cement, 60 to 75% aggregate and 15 to 20% water. With accurate measurements, concrete can be fairly easy to work with, especially for small-scale statement pieces.
Bamboo
If you’re adding some edge on a budget, bamboo could be your go-to natural element. Architects and designers love working with bamboo in various interior styles because of its widespread availability, lightweight structure and versatility. For example, the Japandi style embraces natural bamboo, using a matte finish to highlight the grain and rawness. You’ll likely see it in Scandinavian designs, too.
However, its natural composition can bring a beautiful yet unconventional touch to the flooring, textured accent walls, lampshades and throw rugs.
Design a Home That Showcases You
If you’re ready to take your interior design to the next level, these elements can give you the unique edge you’ve been looking for. With their natural aesthetic and sustainable composition, you can make every room in the house reflect your style. Don’t stick to the mould — create a home that shows off your personality.
